Alert Plumbing Supplies respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

3. What personal information we collect

We only collect the personal information we need. Depending on how you deal with us, this may include:

  • Contact details: your name, email address, phone number and company name when you contact us, request a quote or send a message through our website.
  • Customer and account information: billing and delivery addresses, VAT number, and order and payment history for contractors, developers and account customers.
  • Job applications: your CV, contact details, qualifications, employment history and any other information you send us when applying for a position.
  • Website usage information: your IP address, browser type, the pages you visit and how long you spend on them, collected through cookies and analytics tools.
  • Communications: records of emails, messages and calls with us.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18.

4. Why we collect it

We use your personal information to:

  • process and deliver your orders
  • open and manage customer and contractor accounts
  • handle returns, exchanges and supplier warranty claims

  • send you information about products and promotions, where you have agreed to this
  • improve our website and services

We only process your information where the law allows it. That means with your consent, to carry out a contract with you, to meet a legal obligation, or where it’s in our legitimate business interest and doesn’t unfairly affect your rights.

5. Direct marketing

We will only send you marketing messages if you are an existing customer or have given us your consent. Every marketing message will give you an easy way to unsubscribe. You can also opt out at any time by emailing enquiries@alertplumbing.co.za.

6. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We only share it where necessary with:

  • delivery and courier services, to get your order to you
  • suppliers and manufacturers, when processing warranty claims or returns
  • service providers who help us run our business, such as our website host, email provider, IT support and accounting services
  • authorities, where the law requires us to

Anyone we share information with must keep it confidential and protect it in line with POPIA.

7. Transfers outside South Africa

Some of our service providers, such as website hosting, email and analytics tools, may store information on servers outside South Africa. When this happens, we make sure the information is protected by laws or agreements that give a similar level of protection to POPIA.

8. Cookies

Our website uses cookies, which are small files stored on your device, to make the site work properly and to understand how visitors use it. We may use analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, to collect anonymous statistics about how visitors use our website.

10. How long we keep it

We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, or as long as the law requires:

  • Customer and financial records: at least 5 years, for tax and accounting purposes.
  • Enquiries: 2 years after our last contact.
  • Unsuccessful job applications: 6 months, unless you ask us to keep your CV on file for future positions.

After that, we securely delete or destroy it.

11. Your rights

Under POPIA, you have the right to:

  • ask whether we hold personal information about you, and request a copy of it
  • ask us to correct or update inaccurate information
  • ask us to delete information we no longer have a lawful reason to keep
  • object to us processing your information, including for direct marketing
  • withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on consent
  • lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator

To make a request, contact our Information Officer using the details in section 2. We may need to confirm your identity before we act on a request.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, please contact our Information Officer first so we can try to resolve it.

Our website may link to supplier and manufacturer websites. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, so please read their privacy policies.
